SUMMARY:Van Zandt GS Fall Genealogy All-Day Seminar!
DESCRIPTION:Come broaden your research horizons! Our yearly Fall Seminar aims to educate genealogists of all levels. This year our speaker is John A. Sellers\, a genealogist with decades of experience\, who has taught thousands of researchers. John always impresses his students with his deep grasp of history and research and his ability to make it fun and useful. He backs up his lectures with examples from his own research. \n \n“The Other Court in Texas” How to understand and access records in the district courts of Texas. A valuable resource we shouldn’t ignore. These records include divorces\, civil and criminal cases\, adoptions\, and ex-parte cases. \n“Women: That Gender You Can’t Do Without In Your Research” Women are half of your family tree. This class addresses the ways to research your female lines. \n“Your Ancestor’s Cousins” The study of collateral research\, siblings of your ancestors and their offspring can lead you to new research and discoveries. Rarely does a family move alone across the country\, especially from the early 20th century and earlier. Knowing your collateral kin helps you get over research “brick walls.” \n“Here Comes the Judge: Your Ancestor’s Day in Court” Most of our ancestors had their day in court either as a defendant\, plaintiff\, or a juror. This lecture studies the proceedings of trial courts and how to access their records. \n Register

SUMMARY:Van Zandt County Genealogical Society Monthly Meeting
DESCRIPTION:History of Texas Rangers at Upcoming Genealogical Society Meeting\nThe Van Zandt County Genealogical Society will have its regular monthly meeting on Saturday\,\nJuly 23 at 2:00 p.m. at the Van Zandt County Library\, 317 First Monday Lane\, Canton. The\nprogram for the meeting will be the history of the Texas Rangers law enforcement agency\,\npresented by Kenny Ray\, a native of Van Zandt County who is also a retired Texas Ranger.\nThe Texas Rangers were organized in the 1820s to bring law and order to the new frontier in\nTexas\, which was then part of Mexico. From a small band of officers created by Texas founding\nfather Stephen F. Austin\, the Rangers grew into an elite law enforcement unit\, which stills\noperates today. The Rangers have figured in story and legend. Their worldwide reputation\,\nhowever\, came from their work on real-life cases\, as they helped to bring such criminals as Sam\nBass and Bonnie and Clyde to justice. \nKenny Ray\, a 6 th generation East Texan\, was born in Grand Saline and graduated from Grand\nSaline High and Texas A&M University. He joined the Texas Department of Public Safety in\n1987\, first working for the Highway Patrol in Canton. After many promotions\, he joined the\nTexas Rangers\, covering the East Texas area. As a former member of the Rangers\, he has real\ninsight into their history. \nThe Van Zandt County Genealogical Society looks forward to hearing about the Texas Rangers\nfrom a member of that elite force. As always\, the public is welcome to attend the meeting on\nJuly 23. You don’t have to be a Genealogical Society member\, and the meeting is free.\nRefreshments will be served.

SUMMARY:Waxahachie Headstones and History Fundraiser
DESCRIPTION:Historic Waxahachie\, Inc. (HWI) is hosting a “Headstones and History” fundraising event on Sunday\, April 3\, 2022\, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. in the Waxahachie City Cemetery to match raised funds for the restoration of the markers after the senseless act of vandalism. During the weekend of February 26\, 2022\, vandals wreaked destruction on the Waxahachie Cemetery. Over 275 gravestones were knocked over\, broken\, and/or destroyed. Many of these markers were over 100 years old. \nThis fundraising event is open to the community as we pull together to support our heritage. City leaders will be present to provide the latest information on repair efforts. Guides will be available to give tours of the damaged areas and share the history of some of our early residents. This opportunity is a great way for everyone to play a part in the restoration of our City’s history. \nThe City of Waxahachie is working with experts to develop a plan to raise and repair these gravestones that mark the burials of former Waxahachie residents. Historic Waxahachie\, Inc. (HW) is committed to helping with the repair efforts by matching every dollar donated at the fundraiser or on the HW website up to $10\,000. All funds raised will go to the City Cemetery restoration efforts. \n More Info

DESCRIPTION:W. W. Glover Cemetery\, 6670 Military Parkway\, Dallas. Behind property that fronts on Military Parkway. \nClean up\, gardening\, and socializing is set for Saturday\, April 2\, 2022. Also\, mowing around the irises\, getting vines and saplings out of the fence\, and making a 8’x8′ planter box for native plants. Things to bring: fire ant killer\, hoes\, brooms\, lawn mower\, shovel\, rake and a trash bag. For your comfort\, please bring your insect repellent\, lawn chairs\, snacks\, sandwiches and water. We will meet at 10:00 AM and break for lunch. Join us before noon to work or visit. (If we are rained out the cleaning day will be the next Saturday.)
