SUMMARY:German Genealogy Group
DESCRIPTION:In-person and Virtual Event \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker: Dr. Sabine Akabayoy \n\n\n\nTopic: Bridging the Atlantic: German DNA for American Genealogists \n\n\n\nThe prevalence of DNA testing in Germany is much lower than in the US and data privacy is much stricter making it much more difficult to research DNA matches. In this presentation we will address differences in DNA genealogy between US and German researchers. This session will provide insights on which platform to find German DNA matches and how to increase our chances receiving an answer when contacting them. \n\n\n\nWe will also talk about migration within Europe and the impact on the ethnicity estimate and how we can utilize the ethnicity estimate to determine the location of our German ancestors. It is crucial to combine DNA results with traditional genealogical research so we will touch slightly  on how to find records pointing to the place of origin prior to immigration that will also help filtering DNA matches. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSabine was born in Germany. Her ancestors are from Hesse\, Westphalia\, East Prussia\, Thuringia\, Mecklenburg and Brandenburg. She immigrated to Israel and has a PhD from the Weizmann Institute of Science and was a researcher at Harvard Medical School before she returned to Israel. Now she uses her research skills as a professional genealogist and translator\, specializing on DNA genealogy\, German genealogy\, immigrants from Germany to the US and Israel\, and Jewish genealogy. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe leaders of this group are Ann Broihier and Bernard  Meisner. SUMMARY:Best Practices SIG
DESCRIPTION:In-person Only \n\n\n\nTopic: FAN Club Methodology \n\n\n\nThe Best Practices SIG is for genealogists who want to learn advanced methodology skills and techniques. We’ll continue studying applying FAN Club methodology to our own research. Please come ready to share your progress\, or bring a challenge you’re facing. Whether you’re moving forward or feeling stuck\, there’s always something to learn together. \n\n\n\n“The only voice that documents have is the voice we give them. With every document we find\, and every story we tell\, we have a choice:We can take what we see at face value\, report it devoid of context\, and run the risk of misrepresenting the circumstances.Or we can seek the context we need to understand the record\, the event\, and the person.” \n\n\n\n– Elizabeth Shown Mills \n\n\n\nYou can contact Liz Kutz\, the SIG leader at bestpractices@dallasgenealogy.org. \n\n\n\nLearn more about the Best Practices SIG.

A handwritten baptismal record from the 1800s? No problem. A faded newspaper obituary? No problem. We’ll cover the best AI platforms as well as how to craft a solid prompt to get you the results you need. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nJOIN THE CALL\n\n\n\nHANDOUT\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWho is Thomas MacEntee? \n\n\n\nSo\, what if I told you that a Baby Boomer guy with a love of punk rock music but also Renaissance Art\, somehow “fell” into the technology industry almost 40 years ago\, and then left a lucrative career in information technology to pursue his love of family history and genealogy? \n\n\n\nAnd that his passion for tracing his roots began over 45 years ago when he was watching the mini-series Roots on ABC Television at his great-grandparents’ house in February 1977? \n\n\n\nWhile some might think these two elements – technology and historical research – are opposites. The truth is\, “tech people” like Thomas are needed to guide today’s genealogists through the maze of options so they can deploy the best apps and devices as they break down those research brick walls. \n\n\n\nThomas MacEntee: author\, educator\, student\, advocate\, marketer\, storyteller\, entrepreneur\, and that “genealogy guy” who helps you accomplish your family history goals.

SUMMARY:Van Zandt County Monthly Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Mic Barnette \n\n\n\nTopic: Extend Your Direct Maternal Lineage: Take an mtDNA Test \n\n\n\nLocation: Main County Library\, 317 First Monday Lane\, Canton \n\n\n\nMic Barnette\, will show what mtDNA is. (Hint: It’s more specialized than the ordinary DNA test most genealogists begin with.) He will also show how family researchers can use mtDNA to improve their family study\, because mtDNA measures the matrilineal (mother) line. Mr. Barnette\, a professional genealogist who is a library associate at the Dallas Public Library Genealogy Department\, wrote a historical-genealogical column in the Houston Chronicle for many years. He lectures widely on family research\, with particular specialization in DNA matters. \n\n\n\nAs with most of the Society’s events\, the meeting is free\, membership is not required\, and refreshments will be served.
