The business meeting starts at 11:00\, followed by our featured speaker around 11:30. \nOur presentation this month is ‘The Texas State Library/Archives and General Land Office at Home and On Site‘ by DGS member Kelvin Meyers. He will discusses what records are available on your home computer or tablet and what resources are available to the genealogist when visiting these great sources of Texas research. Even if you are across the world you don’t have to leave home to locate records about your Texas ancestors. \nSee Kelvin’s Handout here…. \nKelvin is a fifth generation Texan and professional genealogist since 1990 and an avid researcher-historian since 1979\, he is a frequent speaker to many genealogical societies and family associations throughout the US. He was employed for ten years in the Genealogy Department of the Dallas Public Library. Now\, he contracts with attorneys\, banks\, the US Immigration Service and energy companies\, as a forensic genealogist\, searching for missing or unknown heirs to estates and oil and gas leases. Kelvin is a 1989 and 1990 alumni of the Institute of Genealogical and Historical Research at Samford University and has returned to IGHR as lecturer. In 2016 Kelvin completed the Research in States Guide for Texas\, published by the National Genealogical Society. He is a founding member and has served on the board of the Council for the Advancement of Forensic Genealogy. Don’t waste valuable library time on ordinary collections and databases when you are sitting on a gold mine of unique resources! Maximize your experience at your local and destination libraries. \nAbout our speaker:  Ari Wilkins\, a graduate of Louisiana State University\, has been actively researching family history since 1998. Ari worked with the esteemed genealogist\, Dr. James Rose\, for many years on his final project Generations: The WPA Ex-Slave Narrative Database. She is the owner of the genealogical consulting company\, Black Genesis. Ms. Wilkins also works as a contributor for Proquest’s African American Heritage database and Afrigeneas.com. \nMs. Wilkins has spoken nationally at Federation of Genealogical Societies\, Texas State Genealogical Society\, Ohio Genealogical Society\, Samford Institute of Genealogical and Historical Research\, American Library Association\, and a multitude of local societies. \nAri has been a Library Associate at Dallas Public Library since 2007.   She teaches a series of basic research classes using popular genealogical websites. DESCRIPTION:Land Records: Using County Central Appraisal District Websites & County Clerk Websites.  County central appraisal district websites offer a wealth of information about real property.  Most counties in the United States have a central appraisal district (CAD) for all towns and cities in the county which provides ownership and county tax and property valuation information.  County Clerk office websites are not standardized in the same way as the CAD websites and content differs from county to county.  The September  SIG presentation will provide an overview of how to use central appraisal district websites and a demonstration of the Dallas County Clerk’s Office ROAM website with access to digital copies of real property records through a paid subscription or per document cost.
