German Genealogy Essentials: From American Records to German Archives
Saturday, January 24, 2026 | Dallas Public Library
Are you researching German ancestors but unsure how to bridge the gap between U.S. records and German archives? Join the Dallas Genealogical Society for a special educational seminar, “German Genealogy Essentials: From American Records to German Archives,” designed to help you build the skills and confidence needed to take your German research to the next level.
This hybrid seminar will be held at the Dallas Public Library on Saturday, January 24, 2026, and will feature two informative sessions presented by knowledgeable DGS members.
Recordings of the sessions will be available until Saturday, March 28, 2026.
Session 1
From U.S. Clues to German Roots: Using American Sources to Identify Your Ancestor’s Homeland
Presented by Barbara Coakley
Successful research in Germany begins with knowing the exact town and region where your ancestor lived before immigrating to the United States. In this session, Barbara Coakley will explore U.S.-based records that may hold valuable clues to an immigrant’s German origins. Learn how to analyze passenger lists, naturalization records, church documents, census data, and other sources to uncover critical details that point back to Germany.
Session 2
It Depends: How Awareness of German Political, Social, and Cultural Changes is Invaluable in Locating Your Ancestors’ Records
Presented by Bernard Meisner
German genealogical research is deeply influenced by time and place. Bernard Meisner will demonstrate how an understanding of German regional history can help you overcome common research challenges, including shifting borders, changing jurisdictions, religious differences, and evolving record-keeping practices. This session will equip you with strategies to determine what records may exist for your ancestors—and where to find them.
A Perfect Lead-In to Our Spring Seminar
This January seminar is an excellent way to sharpen your German genealogical research skills in preparation for DGS’s Spring Seminar, “German Genealogical Research Strategies,” featuring Michael D. Lacopo on Saturday, March 28, 2026.
The cost of the January 24 seminar is $15, and participants will receive a $15 discount code to use when registering for the March 28 Spring Seminar—making this an outstanding value for anyone interested in German genealogy.
Whether you are just beginning your German research or looking to break through long-standing brick walls, this seminar offers practical guidance, historical context, and inspiration to move your research forward. We hope to see you there!
