From The President: End of the Season

Thank You Michelle! Working with motivated and talented people is one of the perks of being on the DGS Board. Michelle Dwyer Cohen has been our Newsletter editor since 2020, and I can honestly say that I have thoroughly enjoyed each and every interaction I have had with her during that time. We all panicked a bit when she announced that she was moving to Washington in 2021, and we panicked even more when she became the Executive Director of the Association of Professional Genealogists in 2022, but she continued her role on our newsletter through it all, until her recent resignation.

McGowan Records Revisited: Members of the African American Genealogy Interest Group created an on-line index for the 5,566 burial records from the McGowan Funeral home. In what has turned out to be the fist phase of the project was completed in 2019 (Read more about this effort at https://dallasgenealogy.org/the-mcgowan-project-volunteers/).

The group has launched a second effort and will digitize the funeral records from the collection.

  • These images will be available on the DPLs new Recollect Digital Collections server (see the fist images on the server by clicking here).
  • The images will also be linked to the index on the DGS website.

Enhanced Website Search Tool: Our award-winning website has a lot of information, including more than 67,000 records in 8 different database collections. To make finding records in these collections easier we have developed a Universal Search Tool. You can now enter a name, location and/or date range and search for matching records in all of the records.

Go to our https://dallasgenealogy.org/local-records/ webpage and give it a try!
