Out of the Attic: The Hogarth Letter
Recently the Dallas Genealogical Society newsletter committee was honored to receive a transcription of Hogarth family papers from descendant and DGS member, Denise Hogarth Bumford. Included in these papers is the lengthy diary of Denise’s great-great-grandfather, Thomas Hogarth III. Written during the US Civil War, where he served in the Union Armies, the diary is a fascinating record of daily life and activities of a soldier. We plan to serialize the diary over the next several months of the newsletter.
This month we will start with a letter that predates the diaries and offers insight into the family of the author. It is the 1843 Hogarth Letter written by Thomas Hogarth II, father of the diarist, to his family in Ft Wayne, Indiana.
