Three cemeteries were established behind Oakland Cemetery when in 1901 the city of Dallas and Dallas County each purchased six acres of land from J A and Mattie Crawford. [Dallas County Deed Book 265, Page 475 and Book 265, Page208-9.] The city’s property was divided into the City [pauper] Cemetery and Mount Auburn Cemetery. Burials in Mount Auburn began around 1911.

The city and the county shared the responsibility for the burial of pauper dead. A map of these cemeteries obtained from the Dallas Municipal Archives files shows the City Pauper Cemetery, Negro Section City Cemetery, and Dallas County Pauper Cemetery. View Map.
