Dallas county purchased six acres of land from J A and Mattie Crawford in 1901 [Dallas County Book 265, Page208-9]. They used this land for the burial of paupers who lived in Dallas county outside of the city of Dallas. Many of those who died at the Dallas County Poor Farm near Hutchins, Texas, were buried at Resthaven Cemetery. The Dallas County Poor Farm had a cemetery, but the burials there had to be removed in 1911 when Southern Traction Railway right-of-way

This survey was created by recording Texas death certificates from FamilySearch.org and Ancestry.com. The earliest year of burial located on death certificates was 1916. There are no extant tombstones in the cemetery. In 1932 Dallas county joined the city of Dallas in burying paupers at the Dallas City Cemetery on Shady Brook Lane. The county sold some of the land to the Pine Street Missionary Baptist Church in 1944. Later the city created Opportunity Park from part of this land and land from Oakland Cemetery.
