Out of the Attic: The Lucy Helen Hare Autograph Book and Report Cards–1937-1939
by Suzan Younger and Barbara Ware
Serendipity is an occurrence of an event by chance in a happy or beneficial way. That is how an autograph book with school children’s signatures and pictures arrived in the Dallas Genealogical Society’s mailbox in 2019. After finding Lucy Helen Hare’s autograph book and four report cards in donated material, Kathy Helmer, with the Jacksonville (Arkansas) Care Channel for the Needy, Inc., sent them to DGS. Kathy must have assumed they had genealogical value and DGS agreed. The young scholars, faculty, and staff were from the John F. Peeler School and W. H. Adamson High School in Dallas, Texas. Most of the signatures have a date of 1937.
Hopefully, a genealogist somewhere will find a signature and or picture of a family member within these pages and be delighted with Kathy’s thoughtful efforts in saving this small piece of family history. After all, it was something Helen cherished and saved. You can see Helen’s autograph book and report cards here.
Please think about items you have in your private collection and consider submitting an article or transcription for the Out of the Attic section of the monthly DGS eNews. Your material might make a fellow genealogist do a happy dance and make their day.
