The Bells of Peace
By Suzan Younger
The United States celebrates Veterans Day every year on November 11 to recognize and honor military veterans who have served in the United States Armed Forces. It is this day because, on November 11, 1918, at 11:00 am, World War I, one of the most significant wars in human history, was ended by armistice. Historians estimate that over 70 million military personnel participated in the war from locations around the world.
The Doughboy Foundation is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization that dedicates its volunteer activities to the planning and execution of programs, projects, and activities recognizing and educating the public on the American role in World War I. The foundation offers Debra M. Dudek’s book, World War I Genealogy Research Guide, as a free download on its website. This book has over 100 pages of information concerning World War I genealogical research and over 250 links to resources on the web. You can find more information and download instructions by scrolling to the bottom of the Teaching and Learning page.
The Doughboy Foundation invites us all to participate In the Bells of Peace 2021 when, on November 11 at 11:00 am local time, the Bells of Peace will toll. There are multiple ways to join this World War I remembrance, including social media and “The Bells of Peace Participation App.”
I invite you to browse this website for additional information about World War I, including webinars, stories of service, teaching and learning resources, and available resources to help you research men and women who participated directly in the Great War.
