In the ongoing era of COVID-19, Barbara Ware looks back to an earlier pandemic, the 1918 Influenza Epidemic, and its first victim in Dallas.

In the fall and winter of 1918, 456 individuals died of influenza in Dallas county. During the epidemic, Dallas Morning News reported the names of the deceased, including those who died at Camp Dick, the army training camp at the state fairgrounds.
