Wreaths Across America: Oakland Cemetery Dallas, Texas
Lead by Oakland Cemetery volunteer Linda Hagedorn Finley, The Oakland Cemetery Lot Association (OCLA) and the Jane Douglas DAR chapter are participating in the Wreaths Across America on December 17, 2022, at Oakland Cemetery, 3900 Oakland Circle. They are seeking sponsorships for over 600 service members buried at the cemetery. This is the first time that Oakland Cemetery has been a site for Wreaths Across America.
The DGS Cemetery Database identifies service members from the Mexican War, Civil War, Spanish American War, World War I and AEF, World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, Middle East Wars and other Military Service. John C. McCoy (1819-1887), who participated in the Mexican War, is the earliest known military veteran. He is recognized with a Texas historical marker at Oakland Cemetery.
You can participate in this project by sponsoring a wreath or assist with the wreath laying ceremony. An individual sponsorship is $15 for one wreath. The wreaths will be delivered to the cemetery. The OCLA will receive $5 for each wreath ordered to help the Oakland volunteers maintain the cemetery, such as identifying and marking other service members whose military service is not currently known.
If you would like to designate a wreath for a specific person, please search the DGS Cemetery Database for name and location.
Click on WREATHS ACROSS AMERICA to sponsor, volunteer or invite your friends to participate. Cut off date for wreath orders is Monday, November 28th.
The ceremony starts at 11:00 AM on December 17th, with wreath laying starting at noon.
