2021 Fall Tour – Cemeteries of Dallas

The Dallas Genealogical Society is proud to be a sponsor for the Preservation Dallas 2021 Fall Tour – Cemeteries of Dallas. DGS joins the Friends of Oakland Cemetery in sponsoring Oakland Cemetery, one of seven Dallas cemeteries featured on the tour.

Three views of Oakland Cemetery, Dallas

DGS volunteers have worked for years in documenting and transcribing Dallas County cemeteries. We first published the work in books and now have a significant database on our website containing thousands of burials from more than thirty cemeteries. Here is an opportunity to learn about and visit a few of those cemeteries.

Preservation Dallas will host the 2021 Fall Tour – Cemeteries of Dallas on October 30, 2021. Participants will begin the day at the Hillcrest Mausoleum with check-in at 8:30 a.m. and a discussion highlighting cemetery history, evolution, and the built environment at 9:00 a.m. The tour runs from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., with participants safely touring the seven cemetery stops in their own vehicles. Preservation Dallas will provide maps.

The tour’s seven cemeteries include the following.

Freedman’s Memorial Cemetery

Sponsored by Remembering Black Dallas, Inc.

Greenwood Cemetery

     Sponsored by Uptown Dallas, Inc.

McCree Cemetery

     Sponsored by Versar

Oak Cliff Cemetery

Oakland Cemetery

Sponsored by the Dallas Genealogical Society and Friends of Oakland Cemetery

Temple Emanu-El Cemetery

Western Heights Cemetery

The tour includes the symposium and tour at Hillcrest Mausoleum and the seven cemetery stops. Tickets are $30 for Preservation Dallas members and $40 for the public. Reservations are required and non-refundable. Click here for additional information and registration.

The Dallas Genealogical Society and Friends of Oakland Cemetery will have volunteers at Oakland Cemetery to answer questions, provide directions, and conduct a limited Billion Graves project demonstration. Additional activities are still in the planning stage. Watch for volunteer opportunities for this event on the DGS website at “Get Involved.”

We hope to see you there.
