DGS Recognizes Contributions

The Dallas Genealogical Society recognized individuals for their contributions to the Society and to the field of Genealogy at the May 2026 meeting. DGS President opened the awards ceremony with these words:

“The Dallas Genealogical Society continues to grow, adapt, and serve our community with excellence, as proven here today by these awards. I am deeply grateful for your partnership, your trust and your belief in this organization and our collective work. Thank you for all that you do often behind the scenes to ensure the continued vitality and success of the Dallas Genealogical Society.”

Award of Merit: Bernard Meisner &Ann Broihier

The Dallas Genealogical Society proudly presented its Award of Merit to Bernard Meisner and Ann Broihier in recognition of their outstanding service and leadership. Since founding the German Genealogy Group in 2019, they have built a vibrant special interest group, expanded educational opportunities, and strengthened member engagement. They also played a key role in developing the Society’s hybrid meeting format, helping make programs more accessible to members near and far. Through their innovation, expertise, and dedication, Bernard and Ann have made a lasting impact on the Society and its members.

Volunteer of the Year: Betty Case

The Dallas Genealogical Society was pleased to recognize Betty Case as its Volunteer of the Year for her exceptional dedication and service. Since 2022, Betty has been the driving force behind the Society’s hospitality efforts, ensuring that meetings and seminars are welcoming and well supported. She also provided outstanding leadership to the Best Practices Special Interest Group during a period of transition, maintaining continuity and expanding participation through Zoom access. Betty’s reliability, enthusiasm, and commitment to serving others embody the very best of volunteerism and have made a lasting impact on the Society.

Heritage Preservation Award

The Dallas Genealogical Society was honored to present its Heritage Preservation Award to Daniel Greig Babb in recognition of his extraordinary efforts to preserve Dallas history. Through his leadership of the Dallas City Cemetery restoration project, Daniel and his volunteers have identified thousands of graves, recovered hundreds of lost markers, and helped restore dignity to those buried in this once-neglected cemetery. His work has secured significant public and private funding for new memorial markers and has brought renewed attention to the stories of those interred there. A Life Member of DGS, Daniel’s dedication to historical preservation exemplifies the spirit of this award.

Lloyd DeWitt Bockstruck Distinguished Service Award

The Dallas Genealogical Society proudly presented the Lloyd DeWitt Bockstruck Award to Blaine T. Bettinger in recognition of his profound national impact on the field of genealogy. A leading educator in genetic genealogy, Blaine has transformed the way researchers understand and apply DNA evidence through his books, lectures, and educational initiatives. His groundbreaking work, including the widely used Shared cM Project, has become an indispensable resource for genealogists worldwide. Through his innovation, teaching, and leadership, Blaine has helped shape the future of genealogical research for generations to come.

Presidents Special Awards

DGS President Beri Schwitzer also presented two Presidents Special Awards at the event:

Susan Rainwater

Beri recognized Susan Rainwater was for her exceptional service as Treasurer of the Dallas Genealogical Society after stepping into the role midterm at a critical time. She was praised for bringing professionalism, generosity, and calm assurance to a challenging transition, providing steady leadership and dependable support for the organization. Her dedication and commitment have made a meaningful difference to DGS, and Beri expressed sincere gratitude for her service.

Tony Hanson

Tony Hanson was honored in recognition of his many years of dedicated service to the Dallas Genealogical Society. He was celebrated as a mentor, steady guide, and enthusiastic supporter whose generosity, wisdom, and institutional knowledge have strengthened both the organization and its leaders. As a symbol of his lasting impact, leadership, and stewardship, an engraved DGS gavel was presented in his honor. The award acknowledged the meaningful role Tony has played in shaping DGS and inspiring others to lead with confidence.
