by Cheryl Smith
Q: What is the current status of access to genealogy resources? Are there any specific protocols related to the pandemic?
A: The Genealogy Center is open fully to the public. We do not have any limitations. Our hours are Monday through Thursday 9 am to 9 pm; Friday 9 am to 6 pm; Saturday 10 am to 6 pm; and Sunday 1 pm to 5 pm.
Q: What online databases does the library have and are they available remotely or must they be used in the library?
A: We have Ancestry Library Edition, which is available remotely until the end of December. We also offer Dallas Metro News, Fold3, and the TexShare Databases, all of which are available remotely. HistoryGeo is available for use in the library. For remote access, patrons must have a Plano library card.
Q: Please describe the genealogy research environment.
A: The Genealogy Center is a large, open area with plenty of seating. We have 9 computers with access to databases. We have a book scanner that can scan documents up to 17 by 28 inches, in addition to a microfilm/fiche reader. Both the scanner and microfilm reader can save scans to flash drive or print in black and white or color.
Q: General collection description
A: The genealogy collection contains over 13,000 titles pertaining to all 50 states, many foreign countries, “how-to” books for genealogy research, military research, and so much more. Our archives collection focuses on Collin County.
Q: Does the library hold any unique resources that will not be found elsewhere? Can any genealogy books be checked out?
A: Genealogy books located in the Genealogy Center are not available for check out. However, there are several “how-to” books and books on Collin County that are available in Plano Public Library’s circulating collection. Our unique resources include diaries, letters, and photographs about the people and places of Collin County and Plano.
Q: Are there any resources that require an appointment? Any other special restrictions that members of the public should know about? (no backpacks, etc.)
A: We do not have any limitations for the public. Visitors can make photocopies of pages, use their camera or use the scanner. We provide one-on-one assistance to patrons through “Book a Genealogy Librarian”, (https://tx-plano-library.app.transform.civicplus.com/forms/12624). For other questions, email us at genealogy@plano.gov.
