Happy 100th Birthday to The Dallas Historical Society – Established in 1922
By Suzan Younger
You can find Dallas’ history in many places. The Dallas Genealogical Society is always pleased to inform our members and guests about the organizations that share a passion for Dallas’s past. DGS is proud of our long-standing affiliation and collaboration with the Lloyd DeWitt Bockstruck Genealogy Collection and the Dallas History & Archives departments at the J. Erik Jonsson Central Library in downtown Dallas. In the past two years, DGS has sponsored the Legacies Dallas History Conference and the Preservation Dallas Fall 2021 Cemetery Tour. And now, on the occasion of its centennial, DGS recognizes the Dallas Historical Society.
The Dallas Genealogical Society congratulates the Dallas Historical Society on its 100th birthday. Founded in 1922, the Dallas Historical Society is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving Dallas and Texas History. The Society offers education programs, lectures, historic city tours, museum exhibitions, and other special events from its home in the Hall of State in Dallas’ Fair Park. More importantly for the genealogist, the Society houses the G. B. Dealy Library-Special Collections that document the history of Dallas, Dallas County, and Texas. It maintains a large collection of photographs, documents, artifacts, books, and periodicals.
As with many organizations, the Dallas Historical Society is temporarily closed because of the ongoing Covid-19 crisis. However, please take time to explore the Society’s website. You may read more about researching the collection here. There is additional information about the online collection databases, finding aids, and a beneficial list of additional resources providing new opportunities for your Texas research.
